Ana Rosa Chagas Cavalcanti

Dr. Ana Rosa Chagas Cavalcanti is an Architect and Urban Planner who devotes her entire personal, academic and professional carrier to the study of unprivileged settlements and the design of better housing solutions for underrepresented people.

She has performed in field research in some of the poorest favelas in Brazil for a decade. Using etnographic tools, participatory research methods, time series analysis and extended case study, She approached an unprecedented finding in academia: labour is the social practice which most of all shapes, plans and governs space of informal settlements.

From this conclusion, a clear claim emerges: Labour is a housing right, especially for people striving for their physical survival. This necessity must be brought at every level of society: from urban policies to architecture education programs, from social housing strategies and approaches up to social awareness of residents of the formal city.
