      <image:title>Books</image:title>
<image:caption>This book shares the results of a decade of research aimed at finding housing solutions for underprivileged people. In Brazil, the architect Ana Rosa Chagas Cavalcanti temporarily lived in favelas to better understand their spatial logic. This participative observation revealed that labor is the primary social practice shaping, designing, and governing the spaces of these informal settlements. The study shows that, for people struggling with their physical survival, labor is a priority which outweighs the aesthetic, comfort, and hygiene standards that current architectural practices are chiefly concerned with. Therefore, the right to housing must integrate the right to work, and labor must be considered a key social variable when designing housing solutions for informal settlement contexts. From theoretical discussions to examples of real architecture in the global south, this book presents both challenges and potential approaches to creating better housing for the residents of informal settlements. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: comum; Bens comuns; Comuns urbanos; Comuns; Urbanização; Cidades; Habitação ABSTRACT This article presents a critical analysis of the concept of ‘common good’, also known as ‘common goods’ and ‘commons’, to reflect on a definition of ‘urban common’ that can encompass the complexities of the term in the disciplinary field of urbanism, as well as to address some challenges related to contemporary cities. Those challenges were drastically affected by the economic crisis of 2008. Such economic, ecological, social, and political crisis has revived the discussion on the theme of commons among various disciplines and schools of thought. Through a careful analytical interpretation carried out by reviewing the literature on the common good in various disciplines and schools of thought, this essay intends to conceptualize and update the notion of urban commons, emphasizing the problematization of the topics of housing and urbanization in the 21st century. <image:caption>2015 Ana Rosa Chagas Cavalcanti. ‘Planning as curating everyday micro-contexts for a better public policy in the Favelas: The case of the Favela School of Architecture.’ IV World Planning Schools Congress 2016 Proceedings. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2016. [ proceedings] “Mainstream architecture is not enough engaged with political and social contexts. The architecture discipline seems indicated through the same intensities, subjectivities, actors and processes. Schools of architecture usually remind us that architects must spend time designing buildings and, detailing buildings. The need for architecture goes beyond its condition as practice and product through the architect and, excludes the hands of others. The School of Favela Architecture aims to discuss architecture beyond these logics. In this sense, alternative architecture are practices of spatial agency, of social practice. It is about thinking about the architecture of informal settlements, whose values are constantly negotiated, instead of an economy of fixed values which predominates today. Indeed, informal sectors are huge markets; networks of sales people, linked through marketing, chained with multinational warehouses and to street vendors. These people are responsible for each other from a collective perspective. Architecture could make these networks visible.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>2013 - Side walk and space of conviviality for residents of a Social Housing in Terni (Italy). The inhabitants of the social housing are mostly elderly citizens citizens, young families and immigrants. Interviewed inhabitants reported many challenges, mostly related to the lack of spaces for sociability between the housing blocks and, a serious issue with mobility, since there was no distinction between walking and spaces in which cars could run. Hence, my team designed and self constructed in 72 hours, a prototype of a side walk and a space of conviviality to both stimulate the sociability and interaction of those inhabitants who have such a diverse background and at the same time, prevent accidents with cars. That intervention was worth the first prize of the edition of the competition 72HUA in Italy.</image:caption>

Interviewed inhabitants reported the lack of integration with the local German community. The project, which gathered myself and the French office Atelier Le Balto, aimed to act as a urban common and foster the conviviality among the residents.
